We finish each sign on the front and sides with a clear coat, but we do not recommend placing outdoors in the direct elements, for the harsh wind, snow, rain, humidity, and sun will take its toll on the pine wood. Please provide partial protection from these elements if placed outside to make it last longer. If placed in the harsh elements you will need to apply an oil-based Helmsman Spar Urethane every so often to preserve the sign, however we still do not recommend the signs for long-term outdoor exposure.
